Garnerbiker's Journey on planet Earth

This blog started as a trip journal for the summer of 2011 Europe trip of 69 days. My wife Katherine, and I decided to use the entire summer break that teachers get, and go crazy. Everything was new to us. I was surprised at the blog's following. It has now become a tradition to travel on our breaks and blog about it. I write mostly as a journal for myself and students, but also give travel ideas to others that might want to travel like us, or go to the places we have seen. Take a look at what's on here. The experiences that I have had through travel are continuously shaping my life. I recommend you get out there and do it!

Tallinn Day 1

Today we set out for a morning run to explore. Very close to the hostel is this Soviet era bunker. They said it was made for a regatta, but the heavy poured concrete says something else.
From there, we headed back towards the walled old town and found a peaceful park. I set up the TRX and we got in a brief workout. It is quite peaceful this time of the morning without the large crowds. There was one cruise ship family that came by and played on the other exercise equipment, but other than that we had the place to ourselves.
After the TRX workout we continued our run and somehow found some single track around the old city wall. The scent of the flowers was pleasant!
After the run, we showered and headed out to the north section town. Our mission was to hit up the old prison and possibly the sea hangar museum. It was difficult to resist taking a photo of this beauty. Nice!
We snuck up on the side of the prison and walked down to the water. From there we could see the delapidated remains of huge old prison. If you look carefully at the photo, you will notice a woman sunbathing on the rocks. This is not a very comfortable place for catching some rays. I guess when the sun finally comes out in Estonia you plop down for some sun worshipping wherever you happen to be.
We were able to do a self tour around the prison, but declined to take the guided tour. Some people we met at the hostel told us that it was well worth it to pay the entry fee and look at the inside. A girl from Australia said it was insanely creepy, worse that anything that she had seen before. Oh well. Maybe next time.
After the prison, we had some energy left to check out the sea plane hangar museum. We forewent the entry fee and just walked around to look at the boats. There is quite an impressive display around the outside of the hangars. If I were to do it again, you have to plan for almost a whole day to see everything. The weather was nice, so we chose to stay outside and save some money.
This anchor is from 1729. The date is carved into the side and still visible. Most of the huge artifacts on display were found during dredging operations in the harbor. That's also how they found the canons below.
We walked back through a "hipster" part of town and toured a few shops. Most impressive was the old furniture. This restaurant was packed at 4pm! I have noticed everyone here eats all the time. That's great for us since I also have a mixed up eating schedule. I just eat when I am hungry and dig in.
Another great way to end the day!

Tomorrow we will see the dance part of the Estonian Song Festival which we have been patiently waiting for.
