Garnerbiker's Journey on planet Earth

This blog started as a trip journal for the summer of 2011 Europe trip of 69 days. My wife Katherine, and I decided to use the entire summer break that teachers get, and go crazy. Everything was new to us. I was surprised at the blog's following. It has now become a tradition to travel on our breaks and blog about it. I write mostly as a journal for myself and students, but also give travel ideas to others that might want to travel like us, or go to the places we have seen. Take a look at what's on here. The experiences that I have had through travel are continuously shaping my life. I recommend you get out there and do it!

Dublin, Day 2

This is our little breakfast table.  K cooked up some rashers and goodies for our first morning.

Going for a walk down by the river in the center of Dublin.

The Guinness Storehouse.

Up top at the Gravity Bar.  Children were invited as it was part of the tour, but only 18+ for treats.  They say it's the best view in Dublin.  Yes, we agree!

Since 1759.  Now, that must be a good recipe.

Some neat old building we spotted along our way.

Austin, Denise, Marg, K, and A at the Teeling Distillery.

Triple distilled.  The Three Sisters.

Tasting room.

Some neat overgrown walls

The Temple Bar in the Temple Bar neighborhood.  At night it can get rowdy, and is a huge tourist attraction.  It's a fun place!

The rain came down!

Dinner was served by a Lebanese guy that had the BEST lamb cutlets.  Yummy!

Ireland, Day 1

Heading to Dublin!

Leaving Vegas is always bittersweet with views this great.  Red Rock and Mt.Charleston are truly beautiful.  Our flight out took us to Newark, NJ where we had a layover of roughly 6 hours.   No biggie.
I was surprised that the pilot took the north turn after leaving McCarren Airport.

New York City in the background on our approach to Newark.

Andrew's first ride on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Once we arrived in Dublin, we waited it out in the airport for Margaux's flight to arrive. She came in from JFK about two hours after we did.

The Car.

What can I say?  A right hand drive, manual transmission, small, auto engine off vehicle to drive on the left side of the road in massive traffic couldn't be that difficult, right?  With sleep deprivation and jet lag setting in, my concentration on driving was top priority.  Shifting with the left hand feels strange, and with busses passing us and bicycles to worry about, driving suddenly seemed really difficult.

After accidentally taking a toll road and a toll tunnel for really no reason, we had to drop Katherine off to get the keys to the apartment.  Without a place to park along the busiest street in Dublin, Andrew, Margaux and I drove a giant loop in Dublin to come back around and pick her up.  Whew!  It worked, but I pulled in front of a bus and a biker as well.  K said "sorry" to the biker, and he replied, "no worries" as we almost ruined his commute.  I can only get better, but it was a steep learning curve.

A view down a street on our "wake up" stroll.

The city center is quite beautiful and active.  Tomorrow, we plan to meet up with Austin, my brother-in-law Gil's brother from Alabama.  Hopefully, we can catch up on some much needed sleep.
