Garnerbiker's Journey on planet Earth

This blog started as a trip journal for the summer of 2011 Europe trip of 69 days. My wife Katherine, and I decided to use the entire summer break that teachers get, and go crazy. Everything was new to us. I was surprised at the blog's following. It has now become a tradition to travel on our breaks and blog about it. I write mostly as a journal for myself and students, but also give travel ideas to others that might want to travel like us, or go to the places we have seen. Take a look at what's on here. The experiences that I have had through travel are continuously shaping my life. I recommend you get out there and do it!

We slept for a delightful 12 hours of much needed sleep this morning.  The hotel has a very wonderful breakfast over in the main building’s “second” basement.  It was like eating in a bunker with a great spread of culinary delights.

After breakfast, we headed to the lobby to catch up on some photo importing and Internet work.  It seems like I can get everything done except finish these blog entries!  I will have to catch up with that mess on the three trains tomorrow to Munich.  Also, it was raining all day in Zermatt, so you could not even get a glimpse of the Matterhorn.  Too bad!

Lunch was back in the room on the little table that worked just perfectly.  Food is really expensive in Zermatt.   Since we had plans to meet Matthew for dinner, we decided eat a cheap lunch and to blow the cash later.

Cool chair in the climbing store.

After lunch, we took a stroll around the village center to window shop and people watch.  One of the sites I found interesting was the cemetery for the climbers that died in the surrounding mountains.  I had no idea that so many people perished on the high peaks.  It was really moving to read the headstones and see when and where the climbers died.  Quite a few died in their 20’s and then in their 40’s which we found a little strange.

Katherine at the climbers cemetery. There was another larger cemetery across the street, also with climbers.

We met up with Matthew for dinner at a restaurant on the main street.  The food was good and we took our time eating, drinking, talking in the drizzle.  The restaurant's canopy was pulled over the outside seating area and we used the restaurant's blankets to stay warm.  It was nice to have a chilly rain in the summer knowing that back in Las Vegas this would never happen.

Katherine and Matthew. Hopefully, we will meet up with him in Munich.

That's all you get!  This was the best shot we got that evening.

As we left the restaurant, we took a stroll along the river to check the view of the Matterhorn.  It was peeking out from time to time through the blowing clouds.  On our next trip we will spend more time in the area around the Matterhorn for sure.  When the peak was visible, you could really feel how low you were in the valley.

Matthew left us to head for his hostel, and we went back to the Antika Annex.  When we got to the hotel, we checked by the front desk to see if our laundry was finished.  It was, and then they slid the bill across the table for us to see.  Boom! I knew that we were desperate to have our laundry done, and did not have time to wash it ourselves, but this was crazy!  Sleep on that!  I'm glad we had a cheap lunch!

Tomorrow, we take three different trains to Munich and will meet up with Robert and Karola.  The trains have been super nice and I hope to get some blog work done.  It will also be nice to be in a city after being in the wilderness for so long.  I never thought that I would say that.  I guess there is a first time for everything!
