Garnerbiker's Journey on planet Earth

This blog started as a trip journal for the summer of 2011 Europe trip of 69 days. My wife Katherine, and I decided to use the entire summer break that teachers get, and go crazy. Everything was new to us. I was surprised at the blog's following. It has now become a tradition to travel on our breaks and blog about it. I write mostly as a journal for myself and students, but also give travel ideas to others that might want to travel like us, or go to the places we have seen. Take a look at what's on here. The experiences that I have had through travel are continuously shaping my life. I recommend you get out there and do it!

Varna, Bulgaria Day 1

Varna, Bulgaria Day 1

Man! Those long overnight train rides can mess you up. I tried my best to get some shuteye and think only a few hours were successful. We came into Varna at 7am and had to hike it from the train station to the hostel. The city along the Black Sea rang out with morning sounds of people going to work and the friendly sound of seagulls. Our place is called "Yo-Ho Hostel," after pirates yelling the call. All things inside are pirate themed and it's a classic hostel environment. Once again, there is a shady front door entrance and lots of personal artwork from guests and locals. It's also a music hostel supporting local bands and helping with tours coming into town. Tonight is a huge festival down by the sea, and one of Bulgaria's famous bands is playing a last concert. It all goes off to late for us lame -o's. Actually, tomorrow is going to be spent diving, so we gotta rest up. There was also a skateboard competition at the venue by the sea. We only saw people coming and going and I was against fighting the crowds and would rather check out beach.

The beach scene gets it's own special paragraph. Everything you have heard about European beaches is true at the beach we visited. Things that might have gone down in Western Europe and have simmered down are still alive in Varna. Women just let it go for a perfect tan. Men too. Some can do a good job of it, and others should cover up. We were throughly entertained with the scenery and watching how these people conduct themselves on the beach. This area is a hot spot for other Eastern Europeans, but for Americans, it's not really in the list of places to hit. Bulgaria is a happening country like I said before, and I really feel that we are here before things change greatly in the future. The beach had a pool table up by the bar area and the buildings were once again a creation from poured concrete in the socialist era This was built in the 1920s and was a popular place for the Russians to come visit. Andrew will get a chance to check out the beach for round number 2 while the G man and K luv go out in the dive boat. You will have to have personal contact with me to get the full scoop about the beach with each person getting their own censored or uncensored version. All I will say is, "Holy Zeus' beard!"
