Garnerbiker's Journey on planet Earth

This blog started as a trip journal for the summer of 2011 Europe trip of 69 days. My wife Katherine, and I decided to use the entire summer break that teachers get, and go crazy. Everything was new to us. I was surprised at the blog's following. It has now become a tradition to travel on our breaks and blog about it. I write mostly as a journal for myself and students, but also give travel ideas to others that might want to travel like us, or go to the places we have seen. Take a look at what's on here. The experiences that I have had through travel are continuously shaping my life. I recommend you get out there and do it!

Singapore 3

Today we headed to the same place for coffee, or Kopi as it is called in these here parts.  We had a long day ahead, with much more walking and exploring.  The plan was to check out Marina Bay area of town, which turned out to be really intriguing, with activity all around.  We headed to the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), which is something to witness for it's own sake for sure.  Signs are everywhere telling you about the rules and fines.  Singapore is known for this and it’s good to know what you can get in trouble for.

These helicopters were circling for about an hour.  We thought they were doing some training for the USA - North Korea summit in Singapore.  Each time they circled, they got closer.  This was scary since they might be coming to arrest us for some Singaporian infractions that we probably racked up the day before.

Our first choice for lunch market food was a disaster.  They were closed for Ramadan.  So, we hopped onto the MRT and headed into the Marina Bay area.

This is a sculpture right outside the giant durian complex.  It's actually the performing arts center disguised as giant durian fruit.   The durian fruit is one of the many things that is illegal on the MRT due to it's smell, and unfortunately, not everyone finds it delicious.  I have yet to try it, but will fill you in when I do.

Dinner was at a food kiosk right next to the Formula One grandstand.  We decided on a Thai place which turned out to be  great choice.  We were surrounded by Chinese tourists the entire time which made for good people watching.

We walked half the bay over to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.  To view the super trees, you have to go through the impressive hotel from the west entrance.

The spiral bridge heading to the Marina Bay Sands.

Impressive welds!  They were huge.

The super trees are a spectacle with crowds gathered in all directions.  The show began as soon as it was dark enough to see the lights.  Katherine had one particular “friend” snapping pictures right above her head getting as close as possible.  I think he shot 1,000 pictures of the event!  It kind of reminded me of the Bellagio fountains back in Las Vegas with music going along with the show. It was 15 minutes long and mostly a mash-up of classical music and film scores. After the light/tree show, we walked back through the Marina Bay Sands hotel to the MRT station and went back home in the dark.

Tomorrow, we head to Denpasar, Bali on an early flight.  Yay!
